  • I dont know how to respond to people’s notes but this is re: people being disappointed when makers don’t share trade secrets.
 1) Most of the work makers do is how they feed themselves. Forgive them if they are protective of certain things, esp techniques that took a lot of time and wasted money to hone.
2) I have and i do help people with technique issues or hints. However, If i obliged every request i got for free art lessons i would have no time to work or make art for myself. When it comes to people asking how to make involved things like dolls or masks or teach them how to do mold making, it’s just a lot to ask.
3) Makers don’t owe people their technique secrets. Total strangers are not entitled to another’s skills or time. It doesnt’ hurt to ask but if a maker doesnt choose to share, respect their decision. Don’t take it personally or guilt them about it. If you really want to figure it out start researching and experimenting, you’d be surprised. Start with google.

I have the flu so im all sick and whiny and can’t concentrate on “work” art. Wanted to make something cute for a change ( though i think all my monsters are cute) so im making a red panda doll. I will be selling a few but this is self indulgent “baww im a big baby when im sick” work.
Using Monster Clay for the head sculpt since it will just be mold/cast up. MC is reusable and less expensive than sculpey in the long run. I save sculpey for one-off sculpts that will not be reproduced in resin. MC is also easier to work with in some ways since you can heat it to get it super soft ( wax based) so it’s great for larger projects.

I don’t know if you’ll see this, but what is Monster Clay? I’ve never heard of it and it sounds ideal for the kind of sculpting work I do. You say it’s less expensive than Super Sculpey, and that it’s wax-based. Does it melt if you bake it? How does it harden? Also, I would really really love if you could POSSIBLY give me a hint as to how you make your dolls. I ask other artists that make dolls like this, and it’s apparently a secret. :C

It’s really really disapointing when makers and artists keep secrets about technique or process, especially if it’s something I’d like to try myself. Because I know it’s kinda common, I ask small questions about it if I can’t figure it out at a glance..
I googled Monster Clay, myself, and found their website. I plan on getting some later on, once I gain experience with Premo Sculpey. .w.
